(After 5 Years of On-and-Off Fruit Fasting)
As a preamble: I’ve been fruit fasting on and off for the past five years. If you haven’t read my story on why I fruit fast and how it changed my life, you can check out that post here.
Below is my personal experience in response to the common question:
“What detox symptoms have you experienced while fasting?”
Everyone’s body is different, but these are the symptoms I’ve personally experienced—physically, emotionally, and energetically—while fruit fasting.
Physical Detox Symptoms
1. Headaches
This is one of the first symptoms I usually experience. I’m not sure whether it’s mild dehydration, hunger, or simply the body adapting after losing the stimulating effect of cooked foods. Cooked food can feel like a mini adrenal boost, so without it, my body sometimes reacts with headaches.
I follow these steps in my article to get rid of headaches naturally
2. Rashes on Legs and Arms
I often get small rashes on my shins or arms. They usually last up to a week and are mild—more like a light acid-burn feeling or no sensation at all.
I’ve heard these can be related to candida, bacterial detox, or the body eliminating toxins through the skin. The body is full of “maps”—the tongue, eyes, ears, face, feet, hands—so different areas can correlate with different organs.
3. Cold Sensitivity
Being cold all the time is a big one, especially in the beginning. This is why I prefer fasting in summer. Winter fasts are still doable—I just layer up more.
This is also why I did my 21-day fast in Thailand!
4. Flu-Like Symptoms
Completely normal in deeper detox phases. I’ve experienced:
-
Stuffy/Runny nose
-
Coughing
-
Eye mucus
-
Scabs on the scalp
-
Increased earwax
-
Mucus-filled bowel movements
-
Visible parasites in stool
It sounds intense, but these usually pass as the body clears things out.
5. Teeth Coating
A strange but consistent detox sign for me: a thick coating or plaque film on my teeth even though I’m not eating anything starchy. It feels like my mouth is purging and cleaning itself.
6. Weird Smells
Detox can bring out:
-
Metallic or sour breath
-
Stronger-smelling urine
-
Strange-smelling bowel movements
Again — temporary and part of the cleansing process.
7. Pain in Old Injury Sites
This surprised me the first time: old injuries “waking up.”
I’ve felt aches in:
-
Above my left knee
-
Old ankle injuries
-
Previously bruised or damaged areas
It feels like the body revisits old trauma to repair it more deeply.
8. Lung Sensations
When I did a grape-only fast, I experienced lung spasms, which was alarming at first. I’ve had weak lungs since birth and used to struggle with shortness of breath, bronchitis, and chest tightness.
But fruit fasting has actually been a huge part of my healing.
Over the last three years, my lungs have become dramatically stronger. I no longer need to take huge forced breaths just to feel oxygenated.
Energy & Mood Changes
9. Energy Fluctuations
My energy on fruit fasts can vary wildly:
-
High energy bursts — sometimes so intense I can’t sleep
-
Deep fatigue — especially depending on my cycle or how much fruit I’m consuming
-
Slow tapering of the initial energy spike
Both ends of the spectrum are normal for me.
10. Brain Fog + Clarity
I’ve experienced both:
-
Brain fog during strong detox waves
-
Clear-headedness and an incredible sense of peace when my body shifts into a cleaner state
Sometimes clarity comes after the fog—almost like a calm breeze after a storm.
Emotional Detox Symptoms
11. Repressed Memories & Emotions Resurfacing
This is one of the most profound parts of fasting for me.
Memories from childhood I had completely forgotten have resurfaced—along with emotions like:
-
Abandonment
-
Anger
-
Fear
-
Embarrassment
-
Grief
Fasting seems to release emotional buildup the same way it releases physical toxins. It’s uncomfortable, but deeply healing.
Positive Detox Effects
Alongside the detox symptoms, I also experience incredibly positive shifts:
-
Calmness
-
Peace
-
Low inflammation
-
Clear thinking
-
Lightness
-
Improved lung function
-
A deeper mind-body-spirit connection
Fruit fasting has been one of the most transformative things I’ve done for my healing.
Final Thoughts
These are just my experiences after five years of on-and-off fruit fasting and deeper grape fasts. Not everyone will experience the same symptoms, and symptoms aren’t a sign that something is “wrong”—often it’s just your body rearranging and releasing.
