You know those days when your period is coming…
Or you’ve had pizza the night before and gluten/cheese does not agree with you? You just feel off.

Your belly feels swollen.
Your clothes feel tight.
You look in the mirror and suddenly everything feels unflattering.

First of all — you are not ugly. You are likely bloated.

Instead of forcing myself into restrictive jeans or stiff clothing, I rotate through a few outfits that are warm, feminine, and comfortable — especially around the belly.

Here are my go-to winter outfits for when I feel bloated.

I was genuinely bloated when I photographed these outfits, so you can see how these winter looks work for real-life bloating — not just styled for the camera.

1. Long White Tiered Skirt + Oversized Wool Sweater

This is my comfort uniform.

  • Cotton white long tiered skirt

  • Oversized wool turtleneck sweater

  • Paperboy hat

  • Boots or chunky heels

The volume of the skirt balances everything out, and the oversized sweater gently drapes over the stomach without clinging. The natural fibers keep me warm without overheating. If its super cold out I wear my favorite cotton tights underneath.

Why it works:

  • No pressure on the belly

  • Feminine but cozy

  • Easy to layer

2. Cashmere Maxi Skirt + Oversized Cotton Sweater

This is my elevated but effortless look.

  • Long cashmere maxi skirt that is so comfy to wear.

  • Oversized white cotton sweater that hides my belly bump perfectly.

  • Kitten heels or flats work really well with this fit as well.

If I don’t have my big cotton sweater available; I get a different long sweater to slightly bunch or ruffle around the waist so it doesn’t cling to my midsection.

Why it works:

  • Dark skirt visually grounds the outfit

  • Soft knit allows stretch

  • Creates a modern elegant look when feeling meh

3. Tulle Skirt + Fitted Top + Wool Blazer

This is my “Cinderella in the office” outfit.

  • Long tulle skirt

  • Plain black top

  • Straight wool blazer

The structured blazer balances the volume of the skirt while the waistband isn’t restrictive like pants.

Why it works:

  • Movement in the skirt distracts from bloating

  • Blazer adds polish

  • Still warm and layered, perfect for those cold office days when you are big around the middle

4. Bright Maxi skirt outfit

I love this outfit since it has such fun colors that compliment each other. I forget I am bloated when I wear this one.

  • Pink cotton maxi skirt

  • Linen striped long sleeve blouse

  • Yellow Sweater layered on top

The sweater bunches slightly at the waist so nothing pulls tightly across the belly.

Why it works:

  • Maxi skirt to elongate silhouette

  • No waistband digging into stomach

  • Cotton and linen fabrics for those sunny winter days

5. Bell Bottom Jeans + Long Top (Looser Fit Only)

If I do wear pants, they have to be forgiving.

  • High waist Bell bottom jeans

  • Long white button up shirt

  • Baby doll silhouette sleeveless top

  • Chunky boots or heels

The key is that nothing is tight around the lower stomach.

That said — I usually avoid pants during this time.

6. Mini skirt + Long Sweater + Belt

I recently wore this and loved it:

  • Cashmere mini skirt

  • Long oversized cotton sweater

  • White Cotton Leggings

  • Boots

  • Belt placed on hips to distract the eye

The belt doesn’t need to cinch tightly — it’s just there to create visual structure.

Why it works:

  • Layering softens everything

  • Leggings add comfort

  • The eye is drawn vertically, not to the midsection

Why I Avoid Restrictive Pants During Bloating

Personally, I’ve found that many women’s pants rely heavily on synthetic stretch materials to mold to the body. I prefer natural fabrics, which means I often choose skirts with relaxed tops instead.

For me, skirts feel more forgiving, more feminine, and more aligned with how my body changes throughout the month.

What to Wear When You Feel Bloated (Quick Tips)

During this time, I naturally gravitate toward:

  • Skirts

  • Sweaters

  • Long and loose outfits

  • Layers

  • Accessorizing with hats, belts, bags and shoes

I avoid:

  • Tight waistbands

  • Stiff denim

  • Skin tight tops
