What Are Barefoot Shoes?
Barefoot shoes are designed to let your feet move the way they were naturally meant to—without the stiff structure, padding, and restrictive shape of most modern footwear.
They usually have two key features:
1. Zero Drop
“Zero drop” means the heel and the front of the foot sit at the same height from the ground. There’s no raised heel, so your foot is in a neutral, level position as you walk or stand.
2. Wide Toe Box
A wide toe box gives your toes room to spread apart, grip, and stabilize you—something conventional narrow shoes tend to prevent.
Because they allow more natural movement, many people say barefoot shoes help rebuild foot strength and support healthier alignment, which may contribute to improvements in things like:
-
posture
-
back discomfort
-
knee or joint pain
-
muscle imbalances in the legs and feet

My Barefoot Shoe Story
I grew up wearing conventional shoes—the complete opposite of barefoot shoes—and I was active in track, lacrosse, basketball, and volleyball. Through all those years, I never once considered that the knee pain I felt might be connected to my shoes.
By the end of high school, my knees hurt constantly. Walking for more than 30 minutes became frustrating because the ache always crept in.
In my early 20s, I tried my first pair of barefoot shoes: the Primal 2.0 from a company called Lems.
And honestly… it changed my life.
My knees stopped hurting during walking, especially the pain I used to get at the top front of my knees. My toes began to spread much more naturally, which I believe helps my knees distribute impact when I walk, run, or jump.
Movement feels joyful again—more than it ever did when I was younger.
I’ve now been using barefoot shoes for over 5 years, and I’m so glad I made the switch.
A Friend’s Story
A close friend of mine had a similar experience.
He struggled with painful feet from flat arches. Shockingly, his doctor recommended breaking and reconstructing his feet as a solution. Thankfully, he listened to his instincts and declined.
Instead, he transitioned into barefoot shoes. Over time, his feet grew stronger and he even developed more natural arch curvature. His knee pain went away too.
Why I’ve Worn Lems for Years
I personally stick with Lems because:
-
they offer models with a bit more cushioning than other barefoot brands (great for transitioning)
-
their designs blend in easily—even in an office setting
-
they feel durable and comfortable for daily wear
