Introduction

My toxic-free standard means using products with no synthetic scents, harsh chemicals, or fillers. Most conventional products irritate my skin and scalp — so I had to find natural alternatives that truly worked.

After months of experimenting, I finally discovered my natural curls — they’re about 2B–2C! 🌿

Tools I Used

My Step-by-Step Routine

In the Shower

1. Shampoo
Wash your hair thoroughly to remove oil and buildup.
I usually shampoo twice — first with Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Citrus Soap and then with Living Libations Seabuckthorn Shampoo. (Sometimes I just use LL twice.)

2. Condition
Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends, making sure every strand is coated.
I use a Morrocco Method conditioner and leave it in for 5–10 minutes while I shave or exfoliate.

3. Rinse & Brush
Rinse the conditioner out while gently brushing through your hair with a comb. This helps clump strands together for smoother curls and less frizz later.

4. Dry Your Body (Not Your Hair)
After your shower, dry your body but leave your hair dripping wet. You can gently squeeze out excess water — but don’t towel dry yet.

I recommend putting on a loose cotton t-shirt before starting the next steps.

5. Brush with Curly Brush (Optional)
This step helps reduce frizz. Brush your hair in sections while it’s still wet using your curly brush.

6. Make a Gel Mixture
In your palm, mix:

Rub your hands together to blend.

7. Apply the Gel Mixture
Tilt your head to one side so your hair falls like a curtain.
Rub the gel mixture through your hair from mid-length to ends, avoiding the scalp. Repeat on the other side.

If needed, make more mixture — but don’t overdo it, or your curls may get weighed down.

8. Scrunch-Pulse the Hair
With your hair still wet, scrunch upward from ends to roots to encourage curl formation.
(Here’s a great video if you’re not sure what a scrunch pulse looks like!)

9. Dry Your Hair
Use an ionic hair dryer with a diffuser, drying in sections.
If you prefer to air dry, use a microfiber towel to scrunch out excess water, then let your curls air dry naturally.

10. Final Touch
If air drying, move your head around occasionally so your curls don’t dry flat — this helps you keep volume.

Next Few Days

To refresh curls:

  • Use an MM conditioning spray plus water, then re-scrunch while your hair is damp.

  • I don’t do anything special for sleep — I just let my curls be.

My Curly Hair Journey

I first saw a video of a woman who discovered she had curly hair — and her “before” photos looked exactly like mine!

Naturally, I got excited and dove right in. But when I searched for curly hair routines using only natural products, I couldn’t find a single tutorial that met my toxic-free standards.

That’s why I created this post — to share my toxic-free curly hair method for anyone else on the same journey.

The more consistently I do this method, the tighter and more defined my curls become (you can see the progress in my photos!).

If I skip it, my hair definitely gets frizzier — but I’m still experimenting and refining my process.

I’ll keep updating this post as I find what works best. 💚
